Dogs and cats, like humans, can get cavities. Does your dog or cat have bad breath? Studies show that 98 % of dogs with bad breath are suffering from periodontal disease, a result of plaque build up. If left untreated, this can lead to a bacterial infection, which can enter the bloodstream and spread to your pet's kidney, liver, heart and even their brain. Chances are if your pet has very bad breath, there is a problem with his teeth. The most common cause of doggy bad breath is periodontal disease caused by plaque. Bacteria is attracted to the surface of the tooth which becomes mineralized producing calculus. As plaque ages and gingivitis becomes periodontitis (bone loss), the bacteria itself changes to a bone destroying type which produce hydrogen sulfide, doggy breath (halitosis).

Periodontal disease is painful, some dogs and cats will have problems chewing hard food, others will paw at their mouths, unfortunately, many pets will not show any signs. Halitosis is easily diagnosed by smelling your dog or cat’s breath. If there is a foul odor, halitosis is present. A veterinary exam is needed to diagnose the specific cause.

There are four stages of periodontal disease. Early gingivitis and advanced gingivitis are treated by professional teeth cleaning. If the disease is advanced and bone loss has occurred causing periodontitis surgery or tooth extraction may be necessary.

Because we feel caring for you pet’s teeth is very important to his overall health, we offer a complimentary dental exam. If it appears your pet would benefit from a dental cleaning, the doctor will make a recommendation for the procedure. By placing your pet under a general anesthesia, we’re able to do a thorough job of examining and cleaning your pet’s teeth. Our dental care includes dental prophylactic cleaning, polishing and fluoride treatment and extractions, if needed. We also administer an antibiotic injection. Good dental health improves your pet’s well being and can add years to your pet’s life.
